Identification Number (NISS)

The Social Security Identification Number (NISS) is the number that allows a unique, exact and rigorous identification with Social Security, at national level. It is an optional (non-mandatory) Contributory Scheme aimed to ensure the right to Social Security for adult national citizens who are considered fit for work and are not covered by any Mandatory Social Protection Scheme or are covered by social protection schemes not relevant within the scope of the Portuguese Social Security System. The allocation of Social Security Identification Number (NISS) is carried out at the physical location of Segurança Social or at the Segurança Social office in the citizen's store.
